60The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) welcomes the resolution adopted on 3 March 2017 by the Parliament of Portugal recognizing the Holodomor of 1932-33 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people.

The resolution expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people and recognized “the genocide that led to the death of 7 million Ukrainians in 1932 and 1933 in Ukraine,” and condemned “all forms of totalitarianism and all varieties of violations and crimes against humanity, like those that took place in the 1930s in Ukraine.”

The Holodomor was the extermination by enforced starvation of millions of Ukrainians by the Communist totalitarian and imperialist regime of Joseph Stalin in order to suppress the aspirations of Ukrainians to live freely in an independent Ukraine.

Portugal becomes the 17th country to recognize the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people.

“The Ukrainian World Congress congratulates the Parliament of Portugal for its principled resolution and calls for all countries that have not yet recognized the Holodomor as a genocide to do so in memory of the millions of innocent children, women and men who were starved to death,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.
